Camerawork: blog tasks

 1) Pick three camera shots from the Doctor Who scene and explain what type of shot it is and what meanings or effect they have on the audience.

1- the Medium close up shows the characters expressions, shows the character speaking with almost a serious expression in that zoom meeting, which creates an uneasy tone for the audience.

2- An Establishing shot has been used when the character was facing away from the camera towards their computer in their room, making them seem small as if something was about to happen, shows a character is distracted and may be unaware what may happen next. This causes the audience to feel some suspense.

3- An over the shoulder shot has been used, showing a woman facing the other character as if were in her Point of view talking to each other. makes the audience focus on the guy and see the characters serious planning and the tension they could be presenting.

2) Pick one camera angle that is used in the scene and explain the effect it has on the audience.

The high angle used on the scene when A guy went to connect something to a giant machine created a sense  of inferiority by how small the guy is compared to the machine 2:55.

This is also used in an establishing shot of the machine actually working and pulsating with some kind of power had a somewhat opposite sense as it may have used an unusual perspective such as bird's eye view, which despite looking down at it, it was powerful and and big.
3:34-3:41

3) Pick one aspect of mise-en-scene from the scene and explain what connotations are being communicated to the audience.

The lighting used where it was dark (night) and only lights were from the buildings helps communicate to the audience of the mysterious, eerie and somewhat scary atmosphere. The night usually used when something bad is about to happen.

Extension task

Go back to the opening scene of Stranger Things that we analysed for mise-en-scene. What camera shots can you find that are significant in communicating meaning? Are there any particular camera angles used to tell the audience about the characters or narrative?

There are uses of extreme close ups and medium closeups that focus of objects like the sprinkler, the uncoordinated and erratic hand movements from the scientist and the panicked expressions of horror of the scientists looking behind him etc. The closeups can be used as a transition between scenes and or could be a possibility that it is some kind of symbolism for something important later in the movie (foreshadowing).
