His Dark Materials: Language and Representation blog tasks

Language and close-textual analysis 1) Write an analysis of the episode - using  your notes from the screening in class .  Make specific, detailed reference to moments in the text using media terminology (e.g. media language - camera shots and movement, editing, diegetic/non-diegetic sound, mise-en-scene etc.) You can currently  watch His Dark Materials on BBC iPlayer here . Camerawork, editing and sound:   Smooth panning shows how technology has improved since 1960s, still cameras suggests a calm scene or raises tension in a way as it is paired with an underscore (music), CGI for the clock etc suggets perhaps a steampunk themed film or going back in time, use of Non digestic music and sounds enchances the media for the audience. Mise-en-scene:  Feminine and masculine clothing seems to be themed as in the past, perhaps in the victorian times as there was a village shown. Villages show how undeveloped technology is and cities show how modern things ar...

Doctor Who: Audience and Industries

Audience 1) Who is the target audience for Doctor Who? Do you think it has changed since 1963? Target audience now is 12-40+. I do think it has changed as the Sci-fi genre was probably popular with teenagers at 1960s, so it was probably around 12-30, but as time went on, the people grew up and stayed a fan. 2) What audience pleasures are offered by Doctor Who - An Unearthly Child? Apply Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory to the episode. Make sure you provide specific examples from the episode to support your ideas. Personal Identity: School, people may feel represented as they showed girls being annoyed by the boys which the girls may relate as well as the struggle of school being good at eome subjects and bad at others. Personal Relationships: the audience may feel bad for the girl as the teachers coupd risk revealing her secret and her not wanting to lose her happiness at bei ng at school and having relationships. They can also build a relationship with the teacg...

Language and Representation: blog tasks Doctor Who

  1) Write a summary of the notes from our in-class analysis of the episode. You can use your own notes from the screening in class or   this Google document of class notes   (you'll need your GHS Google login).  Camerawork and sound: Doctor Who has used music and and graphics to set a theme of Sci-fi (genre) right at the beggining without any straightfoward verbal introduction, the slow camera movement is caused by thetech in 1960s. There are few flashbacks that   show Susan's mistunderstanding, which gives insight what she is thinking. Medium shot of Doctor holding a vase with the teachers faces makes him appear evil. there are shots of the tardis making sounds and barbara entering the tardis which also builds on the sci-fi genre. Mise-en-scene:Setting appears normal, as it starts off in school where Susan takes the appearance of a teenager and wears the typical hair and clothing from 1960s. teachers enter the junkyard. the junkyard is dark, dim and full of ju...
