Denotation & Connotation blog tasks: advert analysis

Denotation & Connotation blog tasks: advert analysis

1) Write an analysis of the WaterAid advert above using denotation, connotation and analysis. What can you see? What are the deeper meanings in the advert? What does the advert communicate to the audience? How might an audience react after seeing the advert?

2) Now choose your own choice of advert from Google images. Save it to your documents, insert it into your blogpost and write an analysis using denotation and connotation, explaining what the advert is communicating to the audience.

Extension: Print advert research

Read this design blog on some of the best print adverts of all time. Choose one advert that you feel is particularly powerful in terms of its use of connotations and analyse why it is so successful

1) Denotations: This image consists a child of colour (symbolic code), the background image is blurred but looks like it is located in a dry area (Technical code and narrative code). It also features a logo on the top left corner as well as a slogan below it (symbolic code and written code).

Connotations: The choice of background shows a dry area, it could imply about the lack of water people live through. The Slogan 'Dig toilets Not graves' tells us that people are dying from lack of water and are suffering with uncleanliness (hinting at 'dig toilets').

Analysis: The choice of having the child taking up half the image diverts our attention to him, bringing the audiences attention to his sombre expression which represents the people who actually live in dry climates who suffer from dehydration.

2)
Denotations: This poster consists a woman flexing her muscles (Symbolic code), she holds a tough and almost angry expression (symbolic code). There is a slogan above the woman in a speech bubble that point to her making it look like she is saying it (written code and symbolic code), the speech bubble is blue which blends in the background (symbolic code)

Connotations: The excessive use of the colour blue represents masculinity while there is a woman instead. The woman is shown to be flexing which could represent women power and strength which contrasts with the colour blue.

Analysis: Her angry and tough expression could contradict the historical stereotype that women are soft and nurturing by appearing more masculine with not only her expression and clothing but flexing her muscles like how a man does.

EXTENSION:
Denotations: There is a fist with a picture of a car drawn onto it punching a guys face also having a picture of a car drawn onto it REALLY hard (Symbolic code narrative code). There is a slogan right below the impact of the punch (written code). The background is dark, making the scene stand out more.(technical code). The logo is on the bottom right corner.(symbolic code).

Connotations: The use of the fist punching the guys face with said images of the cars represents car crashing violently and could also represent how YOU the person gets impacted too. The dark background could hint at death as black is what we expect to see when we die.

Analysis: The slogan 'Stop the violence, don't drink and drive' was added to prevent drinking and driving as it is a serious common issue where most crashes are caused by drinking and driving, which is also very violent depending how fast and sporadic they drive.
