Heat case study: blog tasks

 Introduction - Heat Media pack

1) Look at the Heat Media Pack. Go to page 2: the Heat mission. Write three things that Heat offers its readers under 'print'.

  •  helping readers navigate TV and streaming.
  •  promises style for everybody, no matter what shape or size, and their team test fashion and beauty products.
  •  Life Hacks gives readers down-time inspo by curating the buzziest experiences in travel, food, fitness, wellbeing and homes.

2) Now go to page 3 of the Media Pack - celebrity focus. What does the page say that Heat offers readers?

They offer celebrity news which would give readers conversation starters to show off their knowledge with their mates.

3) Now look at page 4 of the Heat Media Pack. What other content does Heat magazine offer its readers aside from celebrity news?

They offer clothes, fashion, make-up, hairstyles for cheap and life hacks for food, fitness, wellbeing, travel and homes.

4) Look at page 5. What is Heat magazine's audience profile? Write all the key details of their audience here.

FEMALE/MALE: 90% / 10%

AVG AGE: 37

AGE PROFILE: 52% AGED 15/34
(14% 15-24, 37% 25-34)

SEGMENT:

MARITAL STATUS: 57% MARRIED
or living with partner / 43% single

Media language

1) How are the cover lines written to make the audience want to buy the magazine?

They use rhetorical questions that suggest drama and exclamation marks to dramatize something as well as using namechecks to bring people in. They also use accusatory language which suggests something negative about a celebrity like Posh being a liar, this makes the readers want to know more. like why is she a liar?

2) What are the connotations of the Heat colour scheme on this particular front cover?

The yellow connotes to striking, caution, warnings like "warning! holds lots of drama here!"
Pink connotes to femininity and target audience or the majority reading the magazines.
Red connotes to Christmas which was used in the exclusive side and the advert on the bottom.

3) How are images used to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. paparazzi images or aspects of mise-en-scene such props, costume, make-up, body position, facial expression etc.)

There are six images taken by paparazzi's, it reinforces magazines conventions. To have these celebrities in casual clothing and no makeup while doing normal activities makes the audience more interested about their personal lives. They also add images that make the celebrities who smile are the good ones and the ones that are unhappy the ones who are guilty. Since these images were taken by paparazzi's they were unprepared and obviously didn't pose or was prepared.

4) What differences can you find between the use of design and typography between Tatler and Heat? List at least three differences and explain the effect on audiences.

Tatler uses serif typography as it is a high brow targeted magazine to connote traditional themes, to establish that magazine. they use Sans serif typography as well to modernise their magazine to a younger audience. The magazine is focussed on Royal people and there is only one image and less cover lines compared to Heat which has about six images taken by paparazzi's and a lot of cover lines. Heat uses more sans serif typography as it is very modernised and reinforces drama. the colour scheme is quite vibrant and neon on Heat but on Tatler, their colour scheme is more pastel or dark.

Media Representations

1) What type of celebrities appear on the front cover of Heat? List them here.
Liam
Cheryl
Dani
prince Harry
Giovanna
Mariah Carey

2) How are celebrities represented in Heat? (Positively? Negatively? Reinforcing or challenging stereotypes?)

They present most celebrities as negative to reinforce drama. it reinforces the stereotype that men cheat and that women love to shop for clothes and buy makeup and that celebrities have a lot of drama and relationship problems.

3) How are women represented on the cover of Heat? Think about both images and cover lines here.

Women are presented in heat to look innocent when smiling on the top right, however, the woman in the centre as main cover line is presented to be a liar as the coverline said "secretive star accused of lying to everyone" as well as showing photos of her from the paparazzi to look like an average person taking a run, she was called "posh which is the old name she used to go by as posh spice in a pop band.

4) How do Heat and Tatler represent social class? What different social classes can you find in the features and celebrities on the cover? (E.g. middle/upper class / working class)

Heat is targeted towards working class as they mostly show a lot of images of celebrities and neon colour schemes which makes it look extremely cluttered, there was advertisements for makeup and clothes that are affordable  on the magazine and a LOT of drama which the lower class would enjoy reading as a guilty pleasure. Tatler is more towards the middle/upper class as they mention a lot about the political and royal news and gossip, they use less images of people and look less cluttered with the pastel and dark royal colours that compliment eachother as well as symbolise the Union jack flag.
