Coursework: Summer Project 2025

 1) Research: Music videos

Watch the following music videos and analyse an aspect of media language for each one:

Music video 1: Marshmello x YUNGBLUD x blackbear - Tongue Tied

How is narrative used in this music video to engage the audience?

Using Propp's theory, we are immedietly introduced to the villains which are the police. This gives the feeling of helplessness as the hero was not introduced yet. The storyline of the video itself also helps engage with the audience as it seems to revolve around police violence. Some audiences  can relate to it.

Music video 2: Years & Years - I Wish I Knew

How is camerawork and mise-en-scene used in this video? Use CLAMPS to remember the different aspects of mise-en-scene.

At the beggining, we see a close-up shot that remains still of a man. His shirt has holes in it, his hair is messy and his expression seems upset. In the background there are birthday decorations but no one else is there. This suggests that no one came to his birthday.

The camera zooms in closer into his face then zooms out as a new character walks into the shot with the first guy. The guy who was frowning before was more excited and happier as he smiles and jumps around a bit, showing how much happier he was.

By the end of the video, there are multiple different shots, like from a side profile etc. There are more people with the first guy and now there is more confetti. He is dancing happily and his friends play instruments.

Music video 3: Foals - Hummer

How is editing used in this music video to engage the audience?

There are a lot of different fast-paced shots of instruments being played which switch when the instrument is being played in the song rather than just showing the whole band. Ive also noticed that they repeated some footage at the begining.

By the middle, it shows the band playing the instruments all together. Then the camera pannes to a guy repeatedly opening an invisible door before cutting to the band walking in a loop. The editing was made to seem as if there are multiple of them walking in a line.

After that it shows a dark blue setting with all the band holing their hand out. The camera switches into one of the guys point of view to where we can see an orange sceene of the band playing and the blue arms holding out to them. This makes a unique image as it leaves the audience to interperate it. Due to the poor quality, i can guess that it is made around the 2000s. This unique editing would engage the audience as it is different from what ghey would usually see.

Music video 4: Your choice

Select a music video of your choice and analyse an element of it e.g. narrative, camerawork, editing, visual effects etc. If you're not sure which video to use you could watch some of the following:

Ariana Grande - One Last Time

Ed Sheeran - Shape of You

You may also want to look a completely different, creative approach to music video - such as these Lego stop motion productions and how they use narrative:

Johnathan Pushkar - We Could Be Together

Keep Me Music Video

Using mise-en-scene, we can see that man is in colour and the art is more crisp and clean. While the people around him are black and white. The lack of colour shows what he has lost due to alcohol.

During the chorus, the art becomes more blurry, and the man is visible drawn drunk. This itself shows how the man is drunk and how the world around him seems.

We also see him drinking at a desk which suggests his addiction also is spreading onto his workplace, showing his lack of control he has in his life. Onto the second verse, we always see him with alcohol, symbolising how much it is affecting his life and how much he depends on it. The second chorus shows him covering his face, he is showing his regret but continues to drink.

by the end, it shows a car driving and inside the car is him and his children. By the end it shows him bloody and injured looking down, suggesting that he had crashed the car and his children had died as a result.

2) Music video planning

Plan out the basic details for your music video. What song do you plan to use? Will your video be performance or narrative based (or both)? Complete the following on your blog:

Artist and song you have chosen:

https://youtu.be/qy9NX7iI6YQ?si=SZXp7prS_-mTgjDW

Plan for music video (narrative/performance etc.):

Ive decided that i should make it about life. Ive realised just how horrible life truly is and how there is no point in being sad about it. Considering Global Warming, the horrible rapists, criminals and people we should trust but cant, i know we will all die very soon. Life is horrible, and no matter what, we are all truly alone in the world. So i want to make it  narratuve. So that i can convey the message in still frames, showing the repetitive notions of life and how there is no point in it. So we should enjoy it while it lasts.

Link to brief (one small step to improving your community):

Have people realise that life will always be unbearably hard, but through it, we should enjoy it and at the same time make it a little easier for others. Like enjoy small things, help others out when you can, have fun.

Actors/performers you plan to use:

Me and my cousin. I play as the singer and help out making others happy.

Locations:

Forest, house?

Costume/make-up/props required:

normal casual clothing to relate to audience. No make-up, i will be covering faces. Maybe just a cup of tea to break.

3) Statement of Intent

On the same Summer Project blogpost, write the rough first draft of your 300-word Statement of Intent for the two-minute music video you plan to create. The final draft of this document will be submitted to the exam board alongside your music video production and is worth 10 marks of the overall 60 marks available.

Guidance and minimum requirements can be found in the AQA brief from their NEA Student Booklet.

We also strongly recommend you look at our Statement of Intent questions to consider document too.

I will be making a music video using Black Gyph0n's song Daisies. This video will involve a lot of nature, it might be a little deppressing and might involve the current events of war and climate change. My video's purpose is meant to highlight how meaningless our life is to the government and how we should enjoy everything while its still here before it dies away. Before war gets worse. This is meant to make people realise the situation as theres no way to stop whats coming, and instead we should be greatful for what we have now.

Most of the camerawork is going to be still and at level with the subject to represent equality. I may add some low camera angles to show the characters are gaining power and control over their lives. The mise-en-scene i will be using is that the characters will be wearing casual clothing and it will be dark coloured to show that they are in a dark place. Perhaps i will put an element of white/lighter clothing by the end to show that they have been enlightened. I will be covering their faces so that anyone watching them can imagine whoever the characters to be. The song i will be using is upbeat, so even with our grim future, we can still be happy now. This is meant to communicate to the audience that despite that they might feel alone, they arent truly alone as there are other people who feel the same way about life. I will edit the video in black and white at the beggining and slowly shift it into colour by the end. I may edit some cartoon elements in the video in some parts. I was not planning on using non-digetic sound as i feel like the song should be the main focus, however i may add it depending if its needed. The digestic sound will be the song and mostly any sound coming from it...

The charecters will be white and female, age ranging up to 21 and 15. This is because i dont have a lot of diversity that i can represent. There is not a lot of diversity in lithuania as it is mostly white people. I will represent the community by covering the faces so than anyone can imagine themselves as the character. It shouldnt really reinforce or challenge any stereotypes as i will not be using any or atleast intentionally.

As my target media audience is young adults, i know that there is a group that feels trapped and helpless with the upcoming events. There is a demographic that enjoys listening to music and a small part who likes to listen to music to escape from reality. The music video i am using is really popular towards a specific group that has enjoyed watching the hazbin hotel series which is about hell seeking redemotion, i found that this song fit with our current events so i will use it. Using the the three Vs, i will use vicarious pleasure as the characters will explore nature and the unique forests to which the audience can expirience through the characters as the forests between the uk and lithuania are vastly different.
